The Time

modern day flute players are just the torch bearers of our deepest ancestral pastimes, long before our recorded history, before the last ice age before the neolithic age during the end of the upper paleolithic and into the mesolithic age our early human and even neanderthal predecessors were making and playing flutes made from vulture bones, ivory, and cave bear femurs, they have been found in caves scattered across europe dating back to between fifty to sixty thousand years ago. these were not shoddy haphazard shots into the wind, these were refined end blown flutes tuned and still playable to this day… so when did it start? we may never know, older and older flutes keep turning up, it seems as if for as long as there have been bipeds walking upright and cooking their kills over a fire there have been flutes, flute players, flute makers, and expression as well as inspiration through sound, we can still see what they painted on cave walls and still see the flutes they managed to preserve, but what sounds filled those caves, how were they used by the medicine men and shaman for healing through sound and what rituals were they associated with, these are the questions burning in my mind… their dna lives inside of us so at least on a genetic level we already know, you feel it when you hear a tone and it takes you somewhere, that is how we can sit in the circle with them once again, doing exactly as they did, just carrying the torch, lucky are the people who find that light, powerful are the ones who share that light! so hear it not for what it is, but for what it always has been and always will be. a timeless meeting place for those who know, those who feel, those who remember, and those who seek to return to… their inner space.
